Pastor Reed Swanson will start July 1, 2017
Pastor Reed Swanson was born and raised in Clarkston, Michigan and graduated from Methodist College in North Carolina, in 1988, with a Bachelor of Arts in Public Administration and Economics. He graduated from Duke University with a Master of Divinity in 1995. At Duke, he focused on the Biblical study of Pauline literature and Christian Ethics, which continues to be his passion.
Before entering ordained ministry, he worked for three years as a movie theater manager, spent three years in the US Army JAG Corps, and ten years in youth and camping ministry, where he met his wife Juliana in 1989.
Professionally he was selected for Order of the Flame by the World Methodist Council on Evangelism. Through the World Methodist Council, he was blessed by traveling the route of Paul’s journeys and visiting the Holy Lands in the year 2000. He served on many Conference boards and agencies including: Conference Council on Youth Ministries, Board of Church Extension, The Bishop’s Vision Task Force, two terms on the Board of Outdoor and Retreat Ministry, the Board of Church and Society, and on the Clergy Senate for the Michigan Area Pastors School. Previous appointments include Detroit Metropolitan UMC 1995-1998, Richmond UMC 1998-2004, and Tawas UMC 2004-2008, Clarkston UMC 2008-2010, and Stony Creek UMC 2010-Present.
Pastor Reed Swanson is a runner, starting in 1972 and has run 24 marathons including 2 NYC Marathons and 3 Boston Marathons. He has also run several triathlons and loves sports of any kind. He was the founding dean of the Sailing Camp Program at the United Methodist Camp Judson Collins, and am a long-time member of the Evangelical Bay Shore Camp association. He is avid reader, both fiction and nonfiction, loves music, singing in quartets, trios, duets and small groups. He is learning to play guitar and piano, testing his memory skills trying to remember how to play trumpet. He occasionally plays the harmonica on ski lifts and long canoe trips.
He married Juliana since April 25, 1992 and they have three children; Will (20), Grace (19), and Joy (13). Juliana grew up in Maumee Ohio near Toledo. She is a graduate of the College of Wooster (Ohio) with a BA in theatre, and did an internship off-Broadway (where she worked with Calista Flockhart). She enjoys Bible Study and was in Bible Study Fellowship for six years, as well as, taking Disciple Bible Study for three more. She is very artsy and crafty and is an avid hand-made card maker. She has worked on the design team of three different stamping and card companies. She is totally dedicated to being mom, but would love more adult conversation in her life.
Will took classes at the local college for three semesters, but didn’t find his passion. After researching the Army College Fund and bonus structure, he is pursuing a spot in the armed forces. He likes lacrosse and soccer (Bayern Munich in particular).
Gracie will be a sophomore at Calvin College where she plays the flute, piccolo, ukulele, and now accordion. This summer she is working in the front office at Bayshore Camp.
Joy is just, well a Joy. She is very bubbly. She loves drama and theatre, baby animal videos, reading, history, Latin, running cross country, and her dog Scarlett. She’s looking forward to riding her bike in Frankenmuth, Ypsilanti streets weren’t very bike friendly.
Join us after Labor Day for a new six week study of Moses.
Retrace the life of Moses from his modest birth and rescue as a baby to the courts of Pharaoh, from herding flocks in Midian to leading his people out of Egypt.
Join Adam Hamilton as he travels from Egypt to Mt. Sinai, the Nile, the Red Sea and the wilderness exploring the sites of Moses’ life. Using historical information, archaeological data, and biblical text, Hamilton guides us in the footsteps of this reluctant prophet who grew in his relationship with God and by the end of life had successfully fulfilled the role he was given.
Turn your own reluctance into boldness as you examine the significant challenges facing Moses and how God shaped his character and life in powerful ways.
